Could we be more self-sufficient?
The population of St. Kilda was a self-sufficient community. Nothing was wasted. When sea birds were caught for their meat, for example, their beaks were used for nails, the oil in their feathers was burned to provide light, and their feathers were sold to the mainland to make pillows.
Today most people waste things and do not make the most of the resources they have. However, some people use their gardens to grow fruit and vegetables. Others might recycle their household rubbish. What do you do? Do you think we could do more to use the resources we have? Can you suggest ways that we could do this?

i think we should make more use out of our resources so we don't make global warming worse.I think it would be a awful place to live because it is far from the UK and the only transport that goes there is boats, which takes 6hrs to get there.

We could be more self-sufficent in leeds, we can grow our own fruit+veg, even raise some animals i.e. chickens. But you have to be self-suffient in St Kilda, there is limited supplies and the boat trip must be aweful, especially in winter.

I think that we could use st. kilda as a great role model and follow in their footsteps. Fair enough, we live in a thriving MEDC and no way are we going to cope with been totally self-sufficent, but some of the things that we import from abroad could possibly be made in the UK. Therefore, contributing less to global warming and also giving the UK some form of independence. Leigh Peirce 10PW :D
I think its good that St Kilda are really self sufficient, because by them using every bit of what they kill it helps them to have food and other necessities. Also we could learn a thing from them and start to think about what we use and that we can use simple things for lots of other different things.
i think that it is good that people use the birds and i think that is good so then people can see what people do.
i think that people should'nt waste the food they should keep it in a cool and dry place so they arnt wasting as many foods. its good that people are using the old ways of catching food for themselfs
Yes we could be self-sufficient. But we aren't and it is likely we never will be. It is just too much of a commitment and most people don't have the time. In theory it is great but in reality it wouldn't work. The only people likely to try and become more self-sufficient are pretentiously named hippies on a "mission"
i think we should try to be more self-sufficient but i doubt people are going to change their ways, people in St.Kilda had to be like that to survive, so we should try to learn from them. lily g
Yes, we could make more use of our resources, But nothing too drastic as the population is too big to make such a big change and not everyone would follow it.
We could grow our own fruit and vegetables and simple things like that could make a small change.

I think St.Kilda sounds like an extremley interesting place to live, and there would be alot to keep yourself occupied (seeing as you have a whole island to explore).I would enjoy living in a tight knit community and being able to survive with no outside support.Being self-sufficient is a skill I think is vital to learn as eventually resources will run out-and we should be prepared for when they do. However I can see that, at the moment, it is impossible to get people to grow their own food and make their own clothes as we live in such a materialistic society.

Yes we could be more self-sufficient. Everybody waistes everything nowadays. Nobody will be though their all selfish.

I dont think leeds should be more self suffient We have the technology not to be. We dont need to for example eat a bird and use its beak for nails. We could just go buy a box of nails from B&Q. I do believe we should recycle more though because of global warming and all the jazz ;)
I wouldn't like to live in St. Kilda because they are more or less cut off from civilisation and they have to do everything for them selves. I think that we could be more self-sufficient and not really on other people and countries as much but i wouldn't like to have nails in my walls that are made out of bird's beaks! That's just wrong.
I think we could become more sufficient in leeds. We would be able to grow our own fruit and veg but chavs would probably destroy the plants before they have managed to grow. Also we could raise some animals like chickens and pigs for food. But there is one problem, we would have to put up with rovers for cars because we couldn't import better cars from abroad.
I think that we should try and help and then we could get better and if we all did to provent global warning like dont drive to shops WALK too save that little bit of fuel which could provent global happening if everyone did that it wou,d be great!!
love you alll .... demi xxx
Yes.
I think we should use our own resources more instead of importing goods from other countries and only eat fruit and vegetables that are in season at the time. Then it would be better for the enviroment because there will be less fuel burnt in the atmosphere
