Life in the trenches

Life in the trenches was hard with the prospect of death of injury never more than a moment from your thoughts. Take some time now to consider the aspects of trench life that made the First World War one of the most horrific events in history. Post your thoughts below.

The prospect of living in the trenches with death or injury always on your thought was difficult. The conditions of the trenches were extremely bad with rats and different disease everywhere and the constent bombardment was enought to drive anybod crazy but having the thought constantly of death or serious life changing injury was beyond braveness. WW1 was one of the most horrific events in history as it was the first major world war and with millions of people being killed. It was completely different compared to
WW2 because in WW2 they had the equipment to keep them safer than the ifrst world war.

World war 1 was supposed to be the last war (the war to end all wars)but events did not turn out like that.
A mixture of poor leadership against modern weapons made life impossible.
It soon became stale mate.
The winner was going to be the side with the most me,equipment and resolve.
Four years of trench warfare was only ended by the late arrival of the American forces.
The war of attrition was going to be won.

The war was the worst place to be, the amount of deaths and injuries were unreal! The trenches were also really small to move around and live in. When you had to go over the top you had no clue if you were going to die or not.The making of the trenches must have been awful aswell because of so much water drowning the place out. In ww2 it was alot better, the equipment was safe and the living conditions were better.

World war 1 was slaughter. The fear must have been tremendous, bombardments; disease; constant shooting; fear of going 'over the top'. More than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, were mobilised in one of the largest wars in history, and was meant to be the last. The death toll was horific with millions dead on both sides. More than 15 million people were killed, making it one of the deadliest conflicts in history.
I believe that this war was inevitable!

The thought of living in the trenches was horrific. The constant increase of death and injuries made the army decrease in size which did not help the predicted outcomes of War.The conditions of the trenches was unbelievable, the rats and the diseases filled the trenches. The thought of bombardment was enough to send anyone crazy but they held it together. World War One was completely different to World War Two because they had more advanced equiptment to keep them safer.

The thought of living in those trenches is horrible. Before the end, when there's all those guns and cannons going off, it's like, yeah, they're definitely going to win this war. But then, at the end, you see all the bodies just left in the trenches. That makes you think, well, was all that fighting worth it? All those guns, and machinery, juts seems like a waste of time, money, and lives. If they'd have had better leaders, then maybe so many wouldn't be dead. Millions of men and women were killed, when they'd been at war for so long.

Living in the WW1 was a horrific experience for all involved, with terrible conditions endangering the health of all. Most suffered from issues such as trench foot its not surprising that a lot of survivors have problems speaking about their ordeals. Soldiers were very brave to deal with the prospect of death in their minds at all times, while losing friends and family due to the millions that died throughout the war. Conditions were made much better in WW2 and people were kept in much better circumstances but there were still issues that could not be rectified.

This video shows just how destructive WW1 was and how 1 minute u could be alive the next dead And the conditions they where living in was horrific dead bodys everywhere water which would cause trench foot. That you would never stop thinking you could die any minute it's so frighting so many people went crazy and ran away and where shot by there own side.

This war was probably one of the worst things that has happened is history, with over 15 million people killed. The trenches were pointless in my mind as they only killed more men because of disease, injuries and the constant bombing from the enemy trench. WW1 resources were very limited which probably caused the war to end earlier. The only way that the Germans and the Austro-Hungarians lost was because of them being overwhelmed by British, French and American soldiers fighting. The war probably would of gone on for much linger if they had more resources and equipment to the standards we have today.

World war 1 was probably the worst war for deaths. In my opinion the trenches were just pointless because more soldiers died of disease in them. The fear must have been outrageous, having thoughts of "going over the top". The death count was horrible more than 15 million men and women lost there lives. In my opinion this was probably the worst war in history

WW1 in my opinion was one of the most horrible wars in History. The soldiers were not well equipt because they didn't think things through as well as they do today and also there weaponary was not the best. Alot of soldiers died in the trenches just of having diseases and infections. But the worst feeling for me would have been "going over the top". The death count of WW1 was Horrific, there were more than 15 millon deaths.

I think that life in the trenches must have been terrifying, as the prospect of suffering and death was always on your mind. Also, I think the soldiers would have been very worried, about going 'over the top'.
The hygiene and general health in the trenches was very poor, and a lot of soldiers would have been ill.
I think the soldiers would have felt restrained, as they can't go anywhere else, or back out, because any part of your body that was visible from outside the trench, was simply shot at.
Millions and millions of people died in WW1, and this war was one of the most horrific, yet famous events in history.

It must of been horrblie in the trenches. I feel sorry for them. Whe i was reading it i though they were going to win because of all the guns. It must of been hard as well when you see people die and then thinging will it be me next?
It also must of been hard for the family members not knowing if they will return home.

Living in the trenches was extremely difficult and disgusting. Death was unavoidable in those conditions. Soldiers were terrified because they must have had a sense of claustrophobia in that confined space. The sound of gunfire and bombs going off all around the trench didn't help either. I think the war was unavoidable and that some soldiers were just thrown in to the deep end.

The conditions of the trenches were truly horrific in the style of fighting and the style of living. The battle of the somme was a form of sencorship by the british government giving a false interpretation of what actually happend.

The thought of living in the trenches is awful because you would be scared all the time about getting shot, asked to go over the top or evan catching a disease whith could be fatal.

Living in the trenches must have been very difficult even for the most hardened warrior. Death could have happened at any time, all it took was one bullet and you could die. Even when you weren't directly fighting, diseases and conditions such as trench foot could be caught, though not all fatal, all were extremely unpleasant.

To sit here and think of the conditions they had to live in is sickening; people dying of diseases all the time. To hear the sounds of bombs dropping and to think that your friends are out there and could be gone just like that must be life changing aswell as horrific.
WW1 is different to WW2 though, in WW2 they had more expierenced men and weapons.

People living in horrific living conditions is not something people want to think about, but this was a war that was full of lots of deaths and unavoidable injurys. People in World war one experienced lots of mental illneses because of the disturbing deaths and the unavoidable Chlostrophobia. The Trenches had a high amount of diseases roaming around. Sometimes thinking about what people went through in the War is too Disturbing to imagine but it is very true that they went through some of the most disgusting and horrific incidents ever. I think that the war was worse than world war 2 because in world war 2 they had more equipment to proceed with the war

WW1 was a tragic and horrific experience for soldiers that fought for their countries. The trenches were in unbelievable conditions and with the constant bombardment it was in no fit state for soldiers to be living in. Nobody could be able to describe what the soldiers families were going through, could you imagine not seeing a relative for so long knowing they were living in a death zone? Overall i think WW1 would of been much different if we had used different and better tactics, on the other hand if we hadnt of used the tactics we did, who knows what Britain would be like today.

Watching the film made me feel sad because of the music and seeing all the dead soilders who lost their lives for what they thought would be the battle to end all battles. Nobody could imagine that it would become the bloodiest battle of all times with thousands of lives lost on both sides. The soilders didn't have any luxeries such as gravy, milk and fresh meat. The illness suffered by the soilders becase of how they lived became commonly known as trench foot.

Life in the trenches was ridiculouse! At that time it was the worst place to be, by far. The war was terrential! Gun fires here, there and everywhere. Bombs exploding, and of course, the fear of going over the top! People were forced to risk there lives to save there country, but that was why they joined the war, and twhen they joined, there was no way back. These men were brave enough, not just to risk there lives for there family, but for there country, and possibly the safety of most of the world. The trenches were probably the worst. Rats, disease, trench foot, enclosed spaces, mud ... it goes on and on. I would not like to be the people down there, all those years ago.

Living in trenches thinking that you might get killed at anytime must be horrible for anyone. This must be made worse by the conditions that they had to cope with e.g. rats causing life threating diseases. WW1 was the most horrific thing for anyone to experience. WW2 was more equpied which means the soliders were alot safer causing not many people to die and catch diseases.

life in the trenches must have been very hard expecialy with the thought of your close friends diying. in the trenches you wasn't alone there was rats, lice (chats), rotting bodies, sewage and other rubbish. The soldiers clothes was usally infested with the lice and it took a while to get them out.
The most horific part was the though of OVER THE TOP or attacking the other trenches as it was unlikly that the soldiers retured back to the trench. i think that life in the trenches was the most horific thing that has happend in hisory as it killed a whole generation of men and left many women widowed.

Living in the trenches in world war 1 must have been terifying with the connditions that they were kept in and death and injury always on their minds. With all the friends and families lost in the war along with all the guns and artillerys being fired makes you wonder if it was all worth it or was it just 'lions led by donkeys'.

Living in the trenches was very problematical because the soildiers had to survive in the extremely strenous conditions. They were disturbed by rats and the clamour of explosions. The casualties were between Britain, France and Germany. Masses of soilders were killed in the period of the battle. Looking at all the recounts and diaries of the war seemed very horrendous.

The conditions in the trenches in the war were atrocious and inhumane. The uniforms/boots were insufficient for the mud and extreme cold/wet weather and warfare. Their equipment was also very basic at that time and often unpredictable and ureliable. Trenches became a terrible place to live with rats, disease and ankle deep water. This led to many of the soldiers suffering and dying in the trenches and not from enemy fire. They should have had more protection to keep them safe from harm.

World War One wasnt just a war, it was a human slaughter, the very limit of human condition before one is in hell. The living conditions, the constant overwhelming fear of the enemy, the not knowing when a bomb might hit. In total, over 15 million people lost their lives or in short nearly a third of the population of england!

Life in the trenches was a nightmare, day in, day out, for the soldiers who fought for their countries and those who died for their countries.Too many people watched their best friends die before them, and those who survived were re - living those terrible moments every time they closed their eyes.
Pain and suffering seeped into each day, while you had to kill people just like you, innocents.
For your country.
Because you had to.
If you didn't want to do that, if you tried to run away from this horrific place, you would be hunted down and shot, and labeled a 'deserter'.
Even if that didn't happen, you could still die from the fatal diseases that became common in this frightening time.
Remembrance Day and memorials are set up to give a clear message : this cannot be allowed to happen again.

i thought the video was interesting and now I have learnt that different countries had different trenches and on the western front there was a massive line oF trenches from Calle. Death was always on your mind and you never knew what was going to happen. I now know aswell that barbed wire was unpenetrable back then and the invasions were unredictable and it changed dramatically. To be honest, parts were sad because they would sacrifice their lives for their army and country. Trench Foot is absolutely disgusting. They were away from home and you could pick up diseases very easily. I think thats why everyone remembers it because it was so disgusting but they made us proud. It was a good video.
