Morley Regeneration Ideas

Renaissance Medicine

Your first extended homework task this year is to produce something that summarises all the factors that influenced Renaissance medicine. It is entirely up to you what you produce, but it must be of quality. Perhaps you could produce a video such as the one above? Or maybe you could do it as a wall display? A newspaper article written at the end of the period which goes through all the major discoveries and what made them possible. You might even wish to produce a podcast interviewing all the significant individuals we have looked at, asking them what made it possible.

I welcome you working in pairs on this task but you must first come to me and propose your idea, I will decide if it requires two people.

The deadline is the first lesson back after half-term, and you will have one or two other bits of homework to complete alongside it so make sure you organise your time. No excuses when it comes to deadline day!

Opposition to Vaccination

Above is a cartoon produced by James Gillray in 1802 called opposition to vaccination. Look at the source and listen to the voice thread then try to answer the following question.

Does this source prove that the public thought vaccination was a stupid ideas when Jenner announced his scheme in 1802? (8 marks)

Although the wording is different, this is a usefulness question! It could easily be phrased as; 'how useful is this source in telling us about the public reaction to Jenner's smallpox vaccination in 1802'?

Remember to get the best marks first go through the source explaining what it does show (why people were fearful of it) and then use your own knowledge with supporting evidence to prove that some people were behind Jenner.

Post your answer in the comments of the blog post. I will post my model answer and your grades after the due date and remember just because you are writing on the Internet it does not mean you let your standards of written English drop!

Wind Farm

Wind farms are very controversial. They are good for the environment as they don't cause any air pollution so don't make global warming or acid rain worse. Plus wind is a renewable resource and our coal, oil and gas will run out soon. But people argue they are noisy, destroy the landscape and hardly produce any electricity. What do you think? Should a new wind farm be allowed on the Shetland Islands?

Witch! Witch!

In class we have been learning about the witch trials of the middle ages. This period of history saw innocent women being blamed for events they could not possibly have caused. For example illness, dead crops, poor weather and mouldy bread were all blamed on these so-called witches. While most of the world no longer believes in witches, are there any lessons we can learn from this horrible event in history? Are there any other examples of where innocent people have been blamed for problems?

Holocaust Memorial Day

Holocaust Memorial Day is the international day of remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust and of other genocides. On it, we commemorate victims, honor survivors and commit to tackling prejudice, discrimination and racism in the present day. The Holocaust that took place in Germany under Hitler during World War Two and saw the murder of 11 million people including 6 million Jews, members of the gypsy community, homosexuals and the disabled. At Morley High School we have been remembering those lot to genocide around the world and promoting the message that we must all stand up to hatred. We are holding a competition to see who can best publicize the ‘stand up to hatred’ message and the winning story, poem, poster, painting or photograph will be used around school to encourage others to make a stand against crimes of hate. Please leave your thoughts and feelings about the day below.

The Industrial Revolution

Between 1750 and 1900 Brain underwent a huge change. This has become known as the Industrial Revolution. The changes brought about during this period impacted all parts of day-to-day life and has been seen as one of the most important periods in British history. In Learning Challenge we have been researching what exactly these changes were and what caused them. Ecover - worth paying for?

Ecover cleaning products use plant-based ingredients instead of phosphates. This reduces their impact on the environment because they do not speed up the growth of plants in lakes and rivers. You can also refill your bottles so that less packaging is wasted! However these products cost almost twice as much as normal cleaning products. Is it worth paying more to protect our environment?

Could we be more self-sufficient?

The population of St. Kilda was a self-sufficient community. Nothing was wasted. When sea birds were caught for their meat, for example, their beaks were used for nails, the oil in their feathers was burned to provide light, and their feathers were sold to the mainland to make pillows.
Today most people waste things and do not make the most of the resources they have. However, some people use their gardens to grow fruit and vegetables. Others might recycle their household rubbish. What do you do? Do you think we could do more to use the resources we have? Can you suggest ways that we could do this?

Repeating Past Mistakes?

We have found out that the demolition of terraced houses and their communities in the 1960s was a big mistake, leaving isolated and vulnerable people living in poor quality high rise flats. In recent years, however, we have seen a huge number of new tower blocks being built in Leeds to house young professionals living in the city. Are we repeating the mistakes of the past? Election Predictions

With Obama taking a ‘break’ from campaigning and McCain wishing Sarah Palin would, this seems like the perfect break in the pre-election festivities to use our in-depth knowledge of the Electoral College to make our predictions. Analyse the polls (that polls! Fred), watch the debates or simply guess a number and post below how many Electoral College votes you belief the President elect will receive. Here is a tip, make sure the number is greater than 270 and please explain how you came to this decision. There will be a prize for the student who gets closest to the final result! Industrial Revolution

History is littered with important individuals that we spend time studying in class, but how important can one individual be? We have looked at Robert Owen, Richard Arkwright, Mathew Boulton and James Watt and what their impact was on the Industrial Revolution. The big question we need to be asking now is which one was most significant in making this period of British history so important or even if the work of these individuals is relevant to the study of this period. Would the Industrial Revolution had have been the same without the work of these men. Leave your views below and explain your answers. Do you agree with what others have posted?

Obama has it in the bag?

In this map compiled on an average of all the major American polls Obama has 264 electoral college votes while McCain has 163 (remember the magic number is 270), there are still 111 votes up for grabs in toss up states where neither candidate has a lead greater than 5% in current polls (see this link for info on which way these states are polling at the moment).

Do you think Obama is on course for an easy win or do you see some way the electoral college system could turn in favor of McCain?
